SUMMARY

As part of the Ashmolean's new Live Friday late-night events, we'll be putting on the first performance of John Eccles' 1701 opera, 'The Judgment of Paris', in Oxford since its modern day premiere in the Holywell Music Rooms in the 60s. Fitting perfectly with the evening's theme of 'An Evening with the Gods', Eccles' opera retells the myth of Paris who must settle a dispute amongst the gods by judging which of three goddesses, Juno, Pallas and Venus, is the most beautiful. Packed with enticing arias of lust, indecision, seduction, jealousy and pride, Eccles' opera showcases the passions and drama of the classical gods at their most thrilling.
