SUMMARY

"What we have come to think of as me is, in fact, just the specimen jar, just the dust jacket, just the white piece of paper that bears the little black marks."

W;t is a surprisingly humourous exploration of the ways that people deal with life, its challenges and its inevitable end.

Dr Vivian Bearing - sharp, devoted and uncompromising - is a professor of 17th century poetry. She specialises in the work of John Donne; a writer who devoted his life to reconciling himself with death.

When Vivian is diagnosed with cancer, she attempts to manage the disease much in the same way as she has managed her studies: compartmentalising and shrewdly analysing every part. But, as her existence is pared down to a routine of chemo courses and the cold attentions of doctors, her lifelong approach will no longer suffice. Vivian, a woman used to employing wit and intellect in every situation, must re-evaluate all that she holds dear in life, just as her life nears its end.
