You are invited to a posthumous cocktail party in 1970s Yorkshire, hosted by a bombastic insurance salesman, Sydney, and his suffocated wife, Linda. The guests of honour are Franz Kafka and his editor and best friend Max Brod, both long dead. The conversation will romp through book-burning, penis envy, tyrannical fathers and the burden of unwanted fame. First performed to riotous acclaim at the Royal Court in 1986, this play is Bennett at his most hilarious, most bizarre best.
So far this term excerpts from the play have been shown on two occasions: at the Brasenose Pater Society and at the Bodleian Library. The excerpts were thoroughly enjoyed by both audiences and we’re really looking forward to the actual performances in 8th Week.
