SUMMARY

“In the small sandy valley, a deep hollow on all sides surrounded by naked crags, there was none present save the officer, the explorer and the condemned man. The explorer seemed to have accepted merely out of politeness the Officer’s invitation to witness the execution of a soldier condemned to death for disobedience and insulting behaviour to a superior.” - In The Penal Colony, Franz Kafka

Director Adam Gethin-Jones is at the helm of the society’s production of this classic text. Adapted for stage by playwright and actor Steven Berkoff, this terms production brings Kafka’s short story to life in the sweltering heat of a degenerating Sanatorium. Witness the iron cogs of colonial bureaucracy fracture under the pressure of moral scrutiny and the weight of careless, despotic rule.
